The Blog
Twible (and other interesting projects)
When I had the idea for Bible Summary I looked around and was amazed that no one seemed to have thought of it before! I discovered a few days ago that someone had thought of it before.
Jana Riess summarises a chapter a day in a much sassier style on her Twitter account as the Twible. She's just finishing 1 Kings.
I got in touch with Jana to express my slight embarrassment. She was very gracious and has even posted an article recommending Bible Summary (and a couple of other interesting projects) at her Beliefnet.com blog 'Flunking Sainthood'.
Many thanks to Jana, and I warmly recommend a visit to Twible!
P.S. On the subject of related projects... I've been wanting to point your attention to @summatheologiae, who is summarising Thomas Aquinas' 'Summa Theologica' on Twitter, proposition by proposition - a truly extreme undertaking!
Blessings and curses
One strange theme in these early chapters of Genesis is that each time God chooses someone and blesses them, the very next thing they do leads to a curse.
Adam and Eve - at the end of chapter 1 God blesses Adam and Eve; in chapter 3 they eat the fruit and the earth is cursed.
Noah - in chapter 9 God gives a similar blessing to Noah; the other half of that chapter relates how he got drunk and cursed Canaan.
Abram - in chapter 12 Abram is told that "in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed"; the very next thing that happens is that he pretends Sarai is not his wife which leads to a curse for Pharaoh.
It's interesting that these first heroes are so deliberately presented as fallible.
A crazy week!
I'm stunned by the response to what I thought would be a little project! 11,000 new followers in less than a week and articles all over the world!
I'm still going through all the emails and messages. Many thanks to those of you who've sent encouragement!
I've put up a press section to link to some of the articles that have mentioned Bible Summary. It's been fantastic that so much of what has been said has been positive.
One of the things I'm happiest about is that many of the articles have quoted my hope that this project inspires you to read the Bible for yourself.
BibleStudyTools.com is one place to start if you don't already have a Bible.
A couple of media things coming up:
- Tomorrow morning I'll be talking about Bible Summary on CNN International via Skype!
- On Sunday morning I'll be talking to lots of BBC Local Radio Sunday Breakfast Shows.
I'll be commenting more on the actual business of summarising the Bible in the future, but everything has been a bit overshadowed by the media attention this week.
There's a long way to go!
I summarised all 1,189 chapters of the Bible on Twitter - one tweet per chapter, one chapter per day for over three years.
