Tweeting the Bible

2 September 2010

Chris Juby, a church worker from Durham (UK), has taken on a task of truly Biblical proportions: summarising the entire Bible on the social networking website Twitter.

Each morning Juby condenses one full chapter of Scripture down to a single 'tweet', with a maximum length of 140 characters. The summary is then published to his followers around the world.  It will take him until November 2013 to complete all 1,189 chapters of the Bible.

Juby says of his task: "I read a chapter of the Bible each morning anyway, so in the first place this was a way for me to engage more deeply with what I was reading. My hope for the project now is that it will inspire others to read the Bible for themselves. My summaries are certainly no substitute for the real thing!"

Bible Summary is still only in Genesis, the first book of the Bible, but a story in Juby's local paper has already led to worldwide interest. The project has been featured in the Telegraph, the Guardian, CBS News 'On the Scene with Shira', the Toronto Star, Stern, and the Australian among many others, and even on TV on CNN's 'World Report'.  The @biblesummary Twitter account has gained 14,000 followers in less than a month.
